Trees are being planting in ideal locations, by people who are committed to care for the trees in the long-term.
Asom Wiwek is a Thai Buddhist meditation center, established at the start of 2010, in the beautiful rolling hills of Chaiyaphum province. A team of committed, energetic Buddhist Monks; local Thai community members and friends from further afield are sharing their time and energy to create a green, serene space for contemplation, meditation and forest conservation. However, you do not need to be a Buddhist to support this project: it's for anyone who wishes to help plant a greener tomorrow.
We plan to plant 84,000 trees by the end of 2013. We are sure that our efforts will succeed because the trees are being planted on sacred temple ground. This will ensure that the trees will not be cut down, and will be cared for by the residing monks, local community members and other visitors. This is already taking place. Now, two years into the project, thousands of trees are already growing healthily.
Below, we share some milestones of the Greener Tomorrow project so far...
The first tree plant was in May 2010. Around 2000 trees were planted. After this, there was a real sense of achievement. People who participated on this day began discussing a bigger project. It was the beginning of the idea to plant 84,000 trees.
On World Environment Day, June 5th, 2011, over 700 people from 20 provinces around Thailand traveled to Asom Wiwek to plant more than 20,000 trees! Friends from 5 countries raised 1,004,206 Thai Baht to buy land for future tree plants.
The Vice-Governor of Chaiyaphum presided over the event, and also personally helped to plant trees for several hours. Mrs. Duangkamol Chansuriyawong, former president of the Thai Ecotourism and Adventure Travel Association (TEATA) gave an inspiring speech to start the tree planting. A team lead by Ms. Lynda Rolf of Prem Tinsulanonda International School organised an English and Environment Camp for 100 local school kids, including games, stories and sports in the forest.
